Actor-singer Elmo Magalona has finally put to rest years of speculation surrounding his relationship with former loveteam partner Julie Anne San Jose, making it clear that their connection was never romantic.
The two, fondly known to fans as “JuliElmo,” built a strong following during the height of their onscreen partnership, with many supporters hoping their chemistry would translate into a real-life relationship.
In an interview with Boy Abunda on March 27 alongside his brother Arkin Magalona, Elmo candidly addressed the long-standing rumors, saying that they were never officially a couple.
“No. We were very good friends. We were very good friends that really wanted to help each other bring our careers up during that time,” he said.
While the two are no longer as close as before, Elmo shared that they recently crossed paths at an event and exchanged brief greetings, showing that there is no tension between them.
He also clarified that they never pretended to be in a relationship for the sake of their supporters.
“Hindi naman. But there were times na ‘yung mga nagsu-support nga sa amin, they would think na kami. Parang gano’n ‘yung talagang nakikita nila during the time na we were having love team performances together, but we were really good friends,” he explained.
Elmo went on to say that romance was never something he pursued with Julie Anne, highlighting that they were both focused on building their respective careers during that time.
“We both have the same vision. I really admire her work ethics din. Sobrang sipag, responsible ni Julie. She’s a very talented woman. I think we were just really too young to really give what the supporters wanted.”
“We were really doing it because we both enjoyed performing, pero it just got to that point na where people were looking for something more,” he added.
Despite persistent fan speculation, Elmo acknowledged the undeniable chemistry they shared onscreen. He also noted that they continue to follow each other on social media, underscoring that there is no bad blood between them. In fact, he expressed openness to collaborating with Julie Anne again in the future.
Elmo and Julie Anne previously worked together in verious Kapuso projects, including the series Together Forever and the romantic drama film Just One Summer in 2012. They also teamed up musically for the song “Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now”, part of the Tween Academy: Class of 2012 soundtrack.
