Filipino Olympian EJ Obiena expressed his sadness over the death of his fellow Filipino athlete, Mervin Guarte. The pole vaulter took to his personal Instagram account to recall his memories with the late athlete.
Mervin passed away earlier this week after being stabbed to death while he was sleeping by an unknown suspect. Police are currently investigating the murder as of this writing.

“I just learned the devastating news of the shocking death of my friend and National Teammate Kuya Mervin Guarte. May his soul rest in peace, and I am sending my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. What a tragedy. Only 33 years old,” EJ wrote.
The two-time Olympian added how his death is a reminder to all not to take life for granted as it could go away easily.
“This is another poignant reminder to us all, that we must embrace every day as a gift; as tomorrow is never guaranteed,” he added.
“Blessed to have shared the track with you. Rest well my friend,” he ended.
Other sports personalities and agencies have expressed their condolences for the family of the late Filipino athlete.

“The Philippine sports community mourns the untimely death of Mervin Guarte, a long-time member of the national team and a multi-medalist from the Southeast Asian Games. Rest in peace! Thank you for your service to the country, Mervin,” the Philippine Sports Commission said in a statement.
Mervin represented the country in various international events such as the Southeast Asian Games. He won two silver medals in the 2011 SEA Games edition for the 800-meter and 1500-meter events, respectively. He then switched to obstacle racing where he won a gold medal during the 2019 SEA Games edition.
He last represented the country back in 2023 where he won the gold medal for the men’s relay. Apart from being a national athlete, Mervin was also an active member of the Philippine Air Force.
