Heart Evangelista led the surgical outreach mission of the Senate Spouses Foundation in Sorsogon.

On her Instagram page, the actress and the president of the foundation relayed that they have provided colostomy to more than 20 kids in the province.

"A new beginning is about to come to 26 young children from different parts of Sorsogon as they underwent pediatric colostomy, a long-awaited period in their journeys," she relayed.

Heart shared that for three consecutive days, the Senate Spouses Foundation "partnered with the surgical angels World Surgical Foundation to serve the life-changing surgeries on children who needed colostomy."

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a colostomy is a "surgery to create an opening for the colon (large intestine) through the belly (abdomen). A colostomy may be short-term (temporary) or long-term (permanent). It's often done after bowel surgery or injury."

Heart shared they saw children as young as 11 months given a "new start with this surgical outreach activity that targets far flung, underserved areas in the country."

"The children have been suffering from Hirschprung’s Disease, a congenital illness that affects the large intestine (colon) and causes problems with passing stool," she said.

The actress pointed out that the disease is one of the top 10 causes of pediatric morbidity in the country.

Heart vowed that they would continue providing medical outreach activities to those who are in need.

"This is just the beginning, we vow to see through the culmination of these children’s having normal lives as they need another surgery to close the temporary ones," she stated. "We are inspired to work harder to be able to reach those where it matters."

The actress also expressed her gratitude to their sponsors for helping make the medical outreach happen.

"As always, thank you to those who continue to believe in SSFI as a partner in delivering serviced to the community and our people," she said.

It was in June when Heart took oath as the new president of the Senate Spouses Foundation Inc. (SPFI) following the election of her husband Escudero as Senate President.
